We hosted our writers’ retreat October 5-7 2018 at the incredible 1440 Multiversity retreat in Scotts Valley, CA. The 75-acre campus is beautifully nestled in the California redwoods near Santa Cruz and was the perfect getaway location with free optional events including sunrise meditations, cooking classes, yoga sessions, and guided walks through the redwoods. For deep relaxation, we had access to the 250-square-foot outdoor hot tub and nourishing massages at the luxury spa. The reasonable room rate included all the chef-curated meals, free activities, and access to the resort’s facilities.
This was a close-knit weekend with nearly 20 participants. Attendees had the option of being paired up with a critique partner in their writing genres. Fire pits peppered the grounds and fresh air abounded. Our participants could be found writing at cafes, lovely patios, and the secluded amphitheater in the redwoods. Programming was minimal in order to give attendees ample time to write, explore their creativity, and relax. Our community of writers bonded during breakfasts and dinners and fostered new friendships. To kickoff the retreat on Friday night, Danielle Sunshine delivered a lecture on creativity and the writing process titled “I’m Not Good Enough, and other lies we tell ourselves”. The presentation was topical and resonated with the audience. On Saturday night, we attended a one-woman comedy show which received a standing ovation. We wrapped up the weekend with participants reading pieces of their work on Sunday afternoon.
It was an incredible experience and we received a lot of feedback citing how productive, relaxing, enriching, and rewarding the whole weekend was. People appreciated the flexibility of the weekend the most. Every event was optional with the choice to write, relax, and commune as much as the individual saw fit. The weekend retreat went by swiftly and peacefully and the energy was uplifting and healing. It was a rousing success and we got a chorus of requests to host this retreat several times a year.
