If you have attended the Golden Gate Conference and Retreat at Asilomar in the past, you will find that our format is familiar, and everything you love about the conference is still here! That said, we strive every year to improve and try new things to make the conference even better than before.
Based on your feedback…
Our goals for this year’s changes, informed by the feedback we gathered in a survey after last year’s conference, are as follows:
Go deeper into craft, balancing the needs of beginning and more advanced writers.
Continue to provide a robust Illustrator Track.
Provide more opportunity early in the conference to help people connect, meet one another, and create community.
Ease the pace where we can, providing more transition time between events, more breaks, and options for writing time.
New this year
More options during break-out sessions so that attendees can customize their conference experience, based on whether they are new to writing/illustrating, or experienced professionals seeking to deepen their craft.
A gathering immediately before dinner on Friday night to connect with attendees most similar to yourself (middle grade, vs picture book etc.) to enhance opportunities to make community connections and sit with people at dinner who do work similar to yours.
Opportunities to skip a breakout in favor of an opportunity to write/illustrate in the company of like-minded artists and writers.
Important scheduling note
In order to ease the schedule (based on very consistent feedback from last year that there were not enough breaks and transitions were too short), we are moving the start of the conference up by 2 hours. We now start at 1pm on Friday (vs 3pm in past years.) Please plan accordingly!
